The Duchamp Opera House: A Historic Icon
The Duchamp Opera House was built in 1830, making it not only the oldest building in St. Martin Parish, but also one of the oldest in Acadiana. It is the oldest surviving opera house in both North and South America.
The second floor hosted theater performances by the New Orleans Opera and other traveling opera companies, dance troupes, and acting groups from all over the world.
In 1918, the building was sold, and it became the Bienvenu Brothers Department Store. When the store closed in 1994, the building was donated to the city of St. Martinville and served several different purposes before being sold in 2022.
After careful renovations following historic guidelines, it is now a premier event space that also includes overnight accommodations to host guests from all over the world.
CLIENT REVIEW
"We had our wedding at the Duchamp Opera House... and it was absolutely wonderful! The owner was great to work with! The entire building is so beautiful we didn't need many decorations... All of our guests thought it was so nice and loved hearing the history of it."
